MIDDLE CLASS BLACK FOLK IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE
Development & National Tour Profile Marquee at THEATRE IV & THE BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM, RICHMOND, VA;
"Middle Class Black Folk In The Clair De Lune" was developed with a fellowship from the New York State Council on the Arts-New York Foundation for the Arts in Playwriting & Screenwriting awarded to Richard Willis, Jr.. As a work development, the play world premiered at The Dramatist Guild, The Door and The Henry Street Settlement in association with The New Federal Theatre, all in New York City.
"Standing room only" performances were presented at The Hudson Guild Theatre in Hollywood, CA. In June 1999, The United Jewish Appeal-Federation "auctioned" a private performance at Christies as part of the "An evening of Dreams" benefit, chaired by Howard J. Rubenstein, Tommy Mottola, and others.
The UJAF charity auction lead to a spectacular benefit evening in September, that featured a pre-reception by Hennessy Cognac, a private performance of "Middle Class Black Folk In The Clair De Lune" at The American Place Theatre, for Jimmy and Jill Haber and fifty of their friends, and a regal post-reception at The Algiers Townhouse, tasting a four-chefs menu from AZ Restaurant.
The cast of "Middle Class Black Folk In The Clair De Lune" donated two performances to benefit "The Third Annual Harlem Summer Arts Festival."
Mozell Entertainment Group, with generous support from or co-sponsors TWA Airlines and Ark Restaurants, Inc. launched the "national promotional tour" of the play. Our threefold mission included: performances, in various communities, to benefit local charities and arts groups. Second: To generate enthusiasm and excitement for an Off-Broadway run of the play. Third: In the spirit of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, obtain production of the television series/mini "Middle Class Black Folk In The Clair De Lune."
-THE MAP PENTHOUSE, NEW YORK CITY
-ALBANY STATE UNIVERSITY, ALBANY, GA.
-FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SYMPOSIUM ON FILM & TELEVISION, MIAMI, FL.
-THEATRE IV & THE BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM, RICHMOND, VA;
-CLARK UNIVERSITY & THE NATIONAL BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL, ATLANTA, GA.
-THEATRE FOUR-NEW YORK CITY (a benefit for GAY MEN OF AFRICAN DESCENT)
-THE HUDSON GUILD, HOLLYWOOD, CA (for the film & television industry)
-THE HOMEGROWN THEATRE, NEW YORK CITY
The promotional performances were to generate press. Moreover, they exposed the play to an audience base that can sustain a successful Off-Broadway run. Being selected for the Biennial National Black Arts Festival created the opportunity for exposure to national and regional theatrical producing organizations. At this festival we began to formulate the framework for the limited Off-Broadway run.
Finally, Los Angeles was essential to our mission to obtain a television series/mini based on the play. The television series will follow the emotional journey of the five characters picking up where the play ended. Our strategy to make this difficult objective a reality was presenting the play as a "live pilot" to excite the decision makers in Hollywood.******************
